Turning Ballooning Passion into Sustainable Support: My Journey into Print-on-Demand

Recently, in the Balloon Talk Facebook group, we’ve been discussing how to make ballooning more accessible for kids and how recreational pilots can sustain their passion. One idea I’ve always believed in has been using Print-on-Demand (POD) to turn our ballooning photos and artwork into products. It’s a fantastic way for families, crews, and clubs to share their experiences, create memorable gifts, and even generate some income. For commercial pilots, POD can also be a great promotional tool.
My own journey with POD started back in 1999 as an early beta tester for CafePress. The founder, Fred Durham, contacted me because of my work on the Balloon Fiesta website. Over the years, I’ve explored different platforms like Zazzle and Fine Art America, but found the profit margins lacking. Life threw some curveballs, but now, with the rise of AI art, I’m diving back in with renewed focus.
In 2017, I established the Ballooning Art group on Facebook to support artists who create works featuring hot air and gas balloons, as well as sport ballooning experiences and events. I quickly set the group to “Hidden” as I had to switch to cancer caregiver mode for almost three years. Fast forward to the present. I have decided to activate that group and share my experiences, tips, and the latest trends in POD there. If you are an artist or photographer, in particular, please consider joining me there soon. Just send me a message requesting an invitation to join.
Let’s explore how we can support our ballooning adventures and each other through creating POD products. Let’s lift each other up and turn our passion into something sustainable!
