L'Entreprenant, Ballon Monté par Coutelle Bataille de Fleurus

Adapted from Card 10 of a proof sheet of 10 collecting cards with pictures of events in ballooning history from 1783 to 1883. This scene depicts the ascension of the first balloon assembled by Colonel J. M. J. Coutelle (1748-1835) for use by the military during the Napoleonic Wars. On June 26, 1794 Coutelle ascended in the balloon with the French adjutant and general to reconnoitre the hostile army just before the Battle of Fleurus began. In all, Coutelle and French chemist Guyton de Morveau constructed four balloons for the military. To complement their work, they co-founded the first aeronautic training school and the world's first balloon corp.
