Gay-Lussac et Biot a 4,000 mètres de Hauteur (1804)

Adapted from Card 5 of a proof sheet of 10 collecting cards with pictures of events in ballooning history from 1795 to 1846. Shows the scientists J.B. Biot and Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac carrying out altitude experiments, reaching to the altitude of almost 4,000 meters (3,962 meters or 13,000 feet) in their flight from the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers in Paris on August 24, 1804. Later the same year in a solo balloon flight, Gay-Lussac ascended to 7,010 meters (23,000 feet), establishing an altitude record that was to last for 50 years.
